Books for your little Pumpkins

Halloween is the perfect time to introduce your child to new and exciting characters. Whether you're a fan of the celebration or your little one is showing an interest in spooky season, we have something for you. Whether it's their first spooky story or they're independent readers with a love for all things creepy, we have a wide selection of books in our Halloween Collection. We have also broken down some of our favourites for different ages below.

Halloween Picture Books

It wouldn't be Halloween without reading some of these classic picture books with your toddler. A great place to start is Room on the Broom by Julia Donaldson. This witty tale from an icon of children's picture books follows the witch and her cat as they fly over the forests, rivers and mountains on their broomstick and pick up a few friends on the way. For more of these classic stories, browse our Julia Donaldson Page, or why not check out our Julia Donaldson ten-book collection featuring some of our favourite stories. We have these books and more available in board book form if you prefer.

For another classic Halloween story, why not try our Meg and Mog Collection 10 Picture Books or FunnyBones 8 Books Collection? Both contain multiple picture books with simple, bold and bright illustrations, making this a perfect book for toddlers. For more picture books, check out our picture books page

Spooky Stories for Kids

For witchy children who want more independence with their reading, why not try Read With Oxford: Winnie and Wilbur? The easy-read short paragraphs are perfect for gaining confidence with independent reading whilst sticking to the seasonal theme. If you’re holding a Halloween party, this pack is perfect for dividing into trick-or-treat baskets. An excellent follow-on from Winnie the Witch would be The Witches by Roald Dahl. It follows a young boy and his Norwegian Grandmother as they encounter vile, cunning and evil witches who want to turn all of the children into mice.

Is your child looking for a supernatural adventure? Check out Amari and the Night Brothers! Soon to be a major motion picture, join Amari Peters as she has to compete against other children to be awarded a unique supernatural talent. At the same time, she tries to uncover the mystery of her older brother's disappearance.

For a darker read enjoyed by both adults and children alike, try Neil Gaiman's books. His children's books are the perfect Halloween reads but be warned, they aren't for the faint-hearted. The Graveyard Book begins with the brutal murder of Bod Owens's family. The book then follows Bod as he grows into a teenager and matures throughout the story, and learns about himself and the world. Continuing with Gaiman, it wouldn't be Halloween without Coraline. When Coraline enters a magical doorway in her family's flat, she is taken to a world almost identical to hers. However, she soon notices a considerable difference. Her 'other mother' and 'other father' have black buttons for their eyes. With the help of a talking black cat, Coraline must navigate this uncanny world and save her reality. Both of these editions are beautifully illustrated by Chris Riddell

YA Vampires

Nothing prepares us for Halloween like a brooding teen vampire, and it would be remiss of us not to mention The Twilight series. Whether you're reading them for the first time before your own brooding teen or if you're passing this piece of nostalgic melodrama onto them, we've got you covered. Once they're in the vampire phase, it's hard to get them out of it; we speak from experience.
