About the Author:
William Shakespeare was an English playwright, poet, and actor of the 16th century, born in Stratford upon Avon. Commonly referred to as the Bard, his works include 39 plays, 154 sonnets, and three narrative poems. His plays have been translated into every major language and are performed more often than any other playwright. He died in 1616 at aged 52, but the cause of his death remains a mystery.
His early plays were primarily comedies and histories such as Henry VI, The Comedy of Errors, and The Taming of the Shrew. He is best known for his many tragedies, including Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet and King Lear. At the end of his career, he predominantly wrote “tragicomedies”, such as The Winter’s Tale and The Tempest.
Even 400 years after his passing, Shakespeare remains relevant in the 21st century. The themes in his works are timeless, in conjunction with his influence on literature and the English language, and as a result, his works continue to be studied in schools worldwide.
