The Wheel of Time series:

This renowned series was written by the legendary high fantasy author James Oliver Rigney Jr., under the pen name Robert Jordan. It was a hit with fans of high fantasy literature, focusing predominantly on epic historical settings and strong characters. Having originally been planned as a six-book series, the collection spans over fourteen volumes as well as a prequel novel and two companion books.

First published in 1990, The Wheel of Time series takes place in our past and our future, with the epic saga telling the story of a man destined to face the Evil One and save the world or destroy it in the process.

At the dawn of time, a deity referred to as the Creator, forged the universe and the Wheel of Time, spilling the Pattern of the Ages using the lives of men and women as its thread. The Creator imprisoned its antithesis “Shai’tan”, meaning the Dark One, at the commencement of creation, sealing him forever away in the Wheel.

However, in the Age of Legends, an experiment unintentionally ruptures the Dark One’s prison, allowing him to rally the corrupt and powerful to his cause in order to remake time and reality his own. But where there is darkness, there must be light if mankind is to be saved from the shadow of the Dark One.

The Prime Video adaptation of The Wheel of Time premiered in November 2021, with more on the way. Season one largely follows the first book in the series, The Eye of the World.

About the Author:

The Wheel of Time author Robert Jordan began the series in 1990 and wrote the first eleven books in the series, as well as the prequel New Spring. He was working on what was planned to be the final novel in the series, A Memory of Light when he died in 2007.

Fellow high fantasy author Brandon Sanderson, best known for the Mistborn Trilogy, was chosen to complete the last book in the series. Sanderson followed Jordan’s extensive notes to complete the book according to his final wishes. During the last stages of the writing process, it was decided the final book would be too large to publish in one volume. It was split into three books: The Gathering Storm, Towers of Midnight, and A Memory of Light.
