Terry Pratchett was the master of satire, fantasy, and children's literature. He holds the honour of being one of the most shoplifted authors. The Discworld series is still loved by fans across the world, and his collaboration with Neil Gaiman, Good Omens, has gained new popularity after its adaptation as a TV series starring Michael Sheen and David Tennant.
Sir Terry Pratchett OBE has written over fifty bestselling novels. His first book, The Carpet People, was published in 1971, and his last novel, The Shepherd's Crown, was published in August 2015, five months after his death. He wrote science fiction, fantasy and children’s novels over his career and is still considered one of the greatest British authors of all time.
Pratchett collaborated with numerous different authors throughout his career. One was Science Fiction author Stephen Baxter. Together they released a series based around parallel Earths The first book, The Long Earth, was published in 2012. For all five books in the series, check out The Long Earth by Terry Pratchett & Stephen Baxter: The Complete Books.
He’s also well-known as an author of children's books. The Johnny Maxwell series follows a young boy living in an English town as he encounters aliens, ghosts and time travel. The book also deals with real issues like Johnny’s parents splitting up and his struggle to fit into the usual school cliques. We have the three Johnny Maxwell books available in our Johnny Maxwell Complete Collection.
Another great Pratchett series for children is The Bromeliad Trilogy. These books follow a tiny group called the Nomes that are hidden amongst people. This series is also called The Nome Trilogy and is great for 9-11-year-olds.
Discworld
Discworld is the fictional setting of one of the most iconic series, and there are a total of 41 Discworld novels. All the Discworld novels take place in a flat, circular world which sits on the back of four elephants, which stand on the back of a giant star turtle. Although this world may look and sound completely different to our own, the Discworld novels explore a multitude of very human issues.
The first book in the series is The Colour of Magic; however, the books can be read in any order. If you are new to the series and you aren’t sure where to start, check out our Terry Pratchett's Discworld Starter Collection 4 Books Set.
Collaboration with Neil Gaiman
In 1990 Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch was released. The book follows the Angel Aziraphale and the demon Crowley as they try to prevent the end times after the birth of the antichrist. Both Aziraphale and Crowley have grown fond of their lives in England and therefore set out to save the Earth. Written by two iconic British authors, Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman, the comedic triumph is a perfect read for any fantasy fan. For more books by Neil Gaiman, check out our Neil Gaiman Collection.
