Roger Hargreaves Books

Best selling author and illustrator of popular children's books—Charles Roger Hargreaves was born in 1935 in a West Yorkshire town called Cleckheaton in England. 

Roger wanted very much to be a cartoonist but the dream seemed to remain unfulfilled. However, after some initial years of helping his father with his Laundry business, Roger did succeed in becoming the Creative Director of an advertising firm in London. Following which he also managed to fulfil his illustrator dreams with his first book Mr. Tickle (1971)that went on to grow into a bestselling series called Mr. Men.

Hargreaves has famously said; the inspiration for his first book of ‘Mr. Men’ series called Mr. Tickle was an innocent question his son Adam Hargreaves had asked—‘What does a tickle look like?’ As an answer to which Roger drew a figure in orange colour with floppy arms and round body to represent a tickle. 

Now a popular children’s bestseller, the Mr. Men series includes Mr. Greedy, Mr. Nosey, Mr. Happy, Mr. Sneeze among 44 other books. The stories of these books are simple and illustrated in brightly coloured pictures. These books by Roger Hargreaves became instant hits selling more than a million copies within 3 years. In 1981 Hargreaves’s book ‘Little Miss’ was introduced. It consisted of 33 books. Books in this series include Little Miss Bossy and the renowned Little Miss Naughty.

After his untimely death in the year 1988, Roger Hargreaves’s son Adam Hargreaves—also an author—took over the Mr. Men and Little Miss characters in new stories. Even after all these years of his passing, Hargreaves is still one of the bestselling children’s authors. His work is a timeless classic that still continues to bring joy and laughter to children starting out their reading adventure. Not just the books, his potato styled simple character designs have also created more than 700 merchandise products.
