Manga

Did you know that Manga has benefits that traditional and comic books do not have? Contrary to traditional books, Manga requires a different set of skills from the readers to decipher the story. Manga relies heavily on images to tell a story, it has several layers of reading including Japanese onomatopoeia, words and visual language. Since Manga has heavy influences from Japanese culture, you will often find contexts and identities that create an interesting storyline that is geared towards Japan and distinct from Western books. Experienced readers of traditional books will find the new approach to be a fun challenge, by deducing images and words simultaneously. As the number of onomatopoeias in the Japanese language is considerably more than English, readers will gradually develop the ability to decipher expressions of fonts and words and associate these with certain types of emotion and actions. By reading Manga, it is developing our skills of Multimodal thinking which gives us the ability to interpret stories and scenarios without translating the language. Many stories in the Manga genre deal with different viewpoints, complex ideas and human experiences which young adults may empathise with. A fun fact about the multimodal nature of Manga is that it may prove beneficial for people who experience Autism Spectrum Disorder, Manga’s visual language focuses on emotion, the faces are often illustrated with pointed chins, small nose, small mouth, large eyes. The face is designed for emotional exaggeration, including hair and accessories and detail which separates each character’s identity. Many people with autism struggle with reading expressions, but because of the huge library of manga series and stories, people with ASD may enjoy a wide selection and are able to recognise these features.
