Picture storybooks are a fantastic way for kids to engage with a book, kids who may fear the idea of finishing an entire book by themselves may develop their skills and confidence first with picture storybooks. Kids can take full advantage of picture storybooks to learn what they can which includes essential reading skills, story development, character personalities and new concepts which can help children with real life situations. It is common for children to begin their reading journey with picture storybooks, this is because the fun and exciting illustrations will help children feel at ease whilst they turn the pages. Picture books can help kids boost their confidence and important literacy skills and vocabulary, in turn kids will learn about sentence structure and develop insight into story setting.

However, the benefits of Picture storybooks does not stop there! As kids continue reading more picture books, children can practice voicing out the sounds, phonology and new words with the guidance of a parent or guardian. Most picture storybooks will have an easy to follow structure with many rhyming words, this method will help children develop important reading skills whilst having fun and learning new words. It is suggested that reading the same story repeatedly also increases vocabulary by 12%. The combination of new words and new character appearances will help children develop visual thinking skills. The illustrations on each page serves more than just providing entertainment, but it also serves the purpose of helping children understand and visualise what is happening in the story, thus grasping the concept easier. The pictures will help kids figure out the narration and increase their comprehension skills too. The engagement between children and parents can be incorporated into the time spent on reading picture storybooks, please notice how kids are often engaged with pictures during their time spent reading, this can be the golden opportunity for parents or teachers to ask questions like what are characters doing, why did they act this way, what expressions are they conveying, what activity is happening here. With the added bonus of the artwork, this is another opportunity for providing new discussions, adults can raise new ideas and questions for kids as pictures can sometimes convey new ideas as compared to the traditional way of reading texts.
