Paddington Bear first appeared in 1958 in the children’s book “A Bear Called Paddington" and since has become an iconic character in British children’s literature. Written by Michael Bond and illustrated by Peggy Fortnum, the Paddington Bear books have been adapted into films, TV series, and the character has appeared on all sorts of merchandise.

The origin of this adorable teddy bear began when this neglected and abandoned toy was tossed and left behind in a department store, only to be discovered by the author Michael Bond who was looking for a gift for his wife during the Christmas Eve of 1956; and since that day Bond began writing a story about this bear for fun, only for it unexpectedly gain popularity among children.

Paddington’s personality resembles a polite and kind-hearted human, always addressing people as “Mr” and “Mrs” and never by first names. Paddington’s charming charisma shows when he gets into trouble innocently constantly by mistake and trying his best to fix things! This lovable bear from Peru usually appears in his old hat and duffle coat, carrying his suitcase with secret hidden compartments!

Fun fact: did you know when the Channel Tunnel was completed in 1994, Paddington Bear was chosen by the British Tunnellers as the first item to be passed through to the French people as a much-loved fictional character from Britain? He famously appeared in a short film with Queen Elizabeth II on her Platinum Jubilee. This led to Paddington appearing in many tributes from the public on the occasion of her death.

Paddington Bear is ideal for young readers of ages 0-5 and ages 5-7.
