Over the years, Britain has produced some of the most important literature of all time. From well-known classics from William Shakespeare or modern bestsellers like J.K.Rowling's Harry Potter series. Browse our extensive British Books collection for some reading inspiration.Ā

British Children's ClassicsĀ

Children's picture books are an important part of childrenā€™s reading journeys. There have been many iconic picture book authors, and Julia Donaldson's characters are among the most popular choices. From The Gruffalo to The Highway Rat, Donaldson's books have been integral to many childhoods. Check out our full range of Julia Donaldson books. For more picture books, check out our Picture Books page.Ā

Another classically British children's author is Roald Dahl. His books have been a firm favourite for generations, from stories about horrible aunts to naughty children. With most of his books adapted into films or TV series, most children know at least one Roald Dahl story even without reading the books. For a great set of his bestselling titles, check out Roald Dahl Collection 16 Books Box Set.Ā

We couldn't write about British books without mentioning Enid Blyton. Her iconic series, such as The Famous Five, The Secret Seven, Malory Towers, and The Magic Faraway Tree, are staples of many children's reading journeys. These books combine childhood adventure with fantasy elements to create memorable tales for the whole family to enjoy.Ā

Another great British author is Jacqueline Wilson. Her works opened up books for 9-14-year-olds to more gripping and real-life stories. Her books have been adapted into many Tv series, most famously CBBC's The Story of Tracy Beaker. Inspired by the book with the same title, the series starred Dani Hamer in the titular role and ran from 2002-2005, it is still one of CBBC's most repeated TV programs and is loved by children of all ages. Several spin-off shows have been created, all starring the iconic Tracy as she grows up and becomes a mum. A great box set for someone starting to read Jacqueline Wilson's books, check out Jacqueline Wilson 12 Books Collection. Wilson has written over a hundred books and is one of the bestselling authors for 9-14-year-old readers.Ā

Classic British LiteratureĀ

It would be remiss of us to discuss British Literature without discussing some of the world-renowned classics we have produced. From William Shakespeare to Jane Austen, British literature has had an everlasting impression on the literature published to this day.Ā

These classic books have been named the most outstanding British books ever written. These books include Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre, Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, George Orwell's 1984, Charles Dickens's Great Expectations, and many more.Ā

Modern British LiteratureĀ

Many groundbreaking modern British authors have gone on to win awards and have changed the course of literary history. Some notable authors include gothic fantasy author Neil Gaiman, historical fiction writer Hilary Mantel, high fantasy novelist Terry Pratchett, and science fiction and drama author Kazuo Ishiguro. These authors, along with many others, have transcended genres and pushed boundaries of what is possible for fictional works. We hope that these authors and many others continue to produce such impressive works for us all to enjoy.
