Agatha Christie is not only one of the most influential and respected mystery writers Britain has ever produced, but also the bestselling novelist of all time. Her books have only been outsold by The Bible and Shakespeare. During her lifetime, she wrote 74 novels, 165 short stories, plays, poems, and even a travel book. Her immortal characters, such as Poirot and Miss Marple, are regularly rediscovered and adapted into film and TV.

Christie’s most famous novel is Murder on the Orient Express. Hercule Poirot, famous Belgian detective, is travelling home to London on the cross-continental train when it’s stopped by snowfall in 1930s Yugoslavia. The body of an American businessman is discovered, and everyone on the train is a suspect for his murder. This classic work of detective fiction has thrilled readers ever since its first publication in 1934, and has been filmed many times. It's available in The World's Favourite Agatha Christie along with two more of her most popular novels, And Then There Were None and The Murder of Roger Ackroyd.

Miss Marple is one of Christie’s most beloved characters. The amateur detective appeared in twelve novels, six films, and multiple television series. The elderly spinster uses her shrewd intelligence and wealth of experience to bring the guilty parties to justice. She was created in order to give old maids a voice, and styled her after her grandmother’s friends.

Agatha Miller was born in Torquay in 1890. She started writing The Mysterious Affair at Styles in 1916 because her sister Madge bet her she couldn’t write a good detective story. It introduced the immortal Hercule Poirot, who was inspired by the Belgian soldiers and refugees she encountered during her day job as a nurse.

She married Archie Christie on Christmas Eve 1914, and he returned to the Great War in France three days after. After the war, the couple moved to London, and Christie found a publisher. They contracted her to write five more books, and her writing career was born. In 1922, the couple set out to travel the world. They returned to London, then moved out to Berkshire. Christie’s mother died in April 1926, and in August, Archie asked Agatha for a divorce. On 3 December, she disappeared for ten days, causing a national manhunt, and was found living in a hotel under an assumed name. The couple finally divorced in 1928.

Agatha Christie met and married archaeologist Max Mallowan in 1930, and accompanied him on all his expeditions. In 1934 they moved to rural Oxfordshire, where the couple lived for the rest of their lives, and Christie did most of her writing. She wrote her final novel in 1973 and died in 1976. Concluding novels for both Poirot and Marple were finished in the 1940s and published the year before and ten months after her death, respectively.
