All My Women Who Independent, Happy International Women's Day!
We at Books2Door are super excited to celebrate another year of incredible women worldwide. From activism to romance, women have been the backbone of cultural expression, resistance, and true power.
Who run the World!
Though we have excellent male writers who have revolutionised the literary world, it is on the foundation of incredible authors like Octavia E. Butler that we have been able to expand into the world of Sci-Fi. Some would argue the foremother of the genre, delve into the unique world of Parable of The Sower where Lauren Olamina has to put her extraordinary powers to good use or let the fate of America fall to ruin.
Through this Sci-Fi lens that Butler has presented us, the dystopian world has evolved and powered through. Take, for example, The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood, a futuristic dystopia that narrates a world in which women lose their agency, power, and rights. Still, the resistance will always emerge, and Offred will do everything she can to make it so.
Women are Love, Love is Women
Let's journey through the genre that women defined, and what better patron than Jane Austen herself? From Pride and Prejudice to Sense and Sensibility, Austen redefined a genre and had an impact that is felt by generations. Though not forgetting that 2020 has brought some bangers themselves, such as Helen Hoang's The Bride Test, it captures all the yearning generations have loved with some very steamy encounters!
There'll be a revolution in this century, enter…Women!
Though we know women to be incredible matriarchs and patrons of the arts, we must not forget that every revolution starts with an underrepresented minority, and history has shown that it is always His Story and never hers.
Authors like Annabelle Hirsch highlight women's history through objects, from the tapestry to radium-laced chocolate (insane). Women's subjugation and freedom are expressed eloquently in our journey through almost everyday things.
Another author who subverts HerStory (get it!) is Pat Barker herself through her exemplification of the Women of Troy and the true epicentre of the Trojan War, Cassandra, Amina and, of course, the face that launched a thousand ships, Helen. Learn the Greek lore from the women who were the true warriors.
The team at Books2Door understands the importance of highlighting the power of voice, especially women's, so from our team to yours, Happy International Women's Day! Let's make our predecessors proud!
