The Inheritance Cycle is a series of four fantasy novels written by American author Christopher Paolini. The series consists of Eragon, Eldest, Brisingr, and Inheritance. It follows the journey of a young farm boy named Eragon, who discovers a dragon egg and becomes a Dragon Rider, destined to save his world from the tyranny of the evil King Galbatorix.

The first book, Eragon, introduces readers to the world of Alagaësia, a land inhabited by humans, elves, dwarves, and other creatures. Eragon, a simple farm boy from a remote village, stumbles upon a polished blue stone in the forest. He thinks it is a precious gemstone, but it turns out to be a dragon egg. When the egg hatches, Eragon is chosen to become a Dragon Rider, an ancient order of warriors who ride dragons and wield magic. He names his dragon Saphira, and together they embark on a dangerous quest to defeat the evil King Galbatorix.

The second book, Eldest, picks up where Eragon left off. Eragon and Saphira are now training with the elves to become skilled warriors and magic users. Meanwhile, Eragon's cousin Roran leads a rebellion against the King in their hometown, Carvahall. Eragon must juggle his training with the elves and his duty to help his cousin and save his people.

In the third book, Brisingr, Eragon, and Saphira continue their training and battle against the forces of Galbatorix. They encounter new allies and enemies and learn more about the ancient language and magic that binds their world together. Meanwhile, Roran leads a campaign against the King's forces and fights to protect his loved ones.

The final book, Inheritance, brings the series to a climactic conclusion. Eragon and Saphira must face their greatest challenge yet as they confront Galbatorix and his army of dark magic users. The fate of Alagaësia rests on their shoulders as they battle to bring peace to their world.

The Inheritance Cycle is a gripping and immersive fantasy series that has captivated readers of all ages. The world-building is rich and detailed, with a fully-realized mythology, history, and culture that gives the story a sense of depth and realism. Paolini's prose is engaging and descriptive, with vivid imagery that brings the world of Alagaësia to life.

The characters in the series are well-developed and memorable. Eragon is a relatable hero who must navigate his new powers and responsibilities while dealing with the loss of his family and the threat of the King. Saphira is a fierce and loyal companion who adds a touch of humour and heart to the story. Roran is a strong-willed and determined leader who fights for his people and his loved ones.

The themes explored in the Inheritance Cycle are also thought-provoking and timely. The series deals with the nature of power and the corrupting influence it can have, as well as the importance of family, friendship, and loyalty. The series also touches on topics such as war, politics, and religion, providing a nuanced and complex exploration of these issues.

The Inheritance Cycle has been praised for its accessibility and appeal to readers of all ages. While it is a high fantasy series with intricate world-building and complex themes, it is also a fast-paced and action-packed adventure story that can be enjoyed by anyone. The series has been translated into numerous languages and has sold millions of copies worldwide. These books are perfect for older kids aged 9-14 and teens.

In addition to the novels, the Inheritance Cycle has spawned a successful movie adaptation, video games, and merchandise such as action figures, t-shirts, and posters. The series has also inspired a devoted fan community with online forums,

Description from the publisher:

Eragon (Inheritance Cycle)

When Eragon finds a polished stone in the forest, he thinks it is the lucky discovery of a poor farm boy; perhaps it will buy his family meat for the winter. But when the stone brings a dragon hatchling, Eragon soon realizes he has stumbled upon a legacy nearly as old as the Empire itself. Overnight his simple life is shattered and he is thrust into a perilous new world of destiny, magic and power. With only an ancient sword and the advice of an old storyteller for guidance, Eragon and the fledgling dragon must navigate the dangerous terrain and dark enemies of an Empire ruled by a king whose evil knows no bounds. Can Eragon take up the mantle of the legendary Dragon Riders? The fate of the Empire may rest in his hands...

Eldest (Inheritance Cycle)

Darkness falls...Despair abounds...Evil reigns...Eragon and his dragon, Saphira, have just saved the rebel state from destruction by the mighty forces of King Galbatorix, cruel ruler of the Empire. Now, Eragon must travel to Ellesmera, land of the elves, for further training in magic and swordsmanship, the vital skills of the Dragon Rider. It is the journey of a lifetime, filled with awe-inspiring new places and people, each day a fresh adventure. But chaos and betrayal plague him at every turn, and Eragon isn't sure whom he can trust. Meanwhile, his cousin Roran must fight a new battle back home in Carvahall - one that puts Eragon in even graver danger. Will the king's dark hand strangle all resistance? Eragon may not escape with even his life...

Brisingr (Inheritance Cycle)

Following the colossal battle against the Empire's warriors, Eragon and Saphira narrowly escaped with their lives. But more awaits the Rider and his dragon, as Eragon finds himself bound by promises he may not be able to keep, including his oath to cousin Roran to help rescue his beloved Katrina. When unrest claims the rebels and danger strikes, Eragon must make choices that take him across the Empire and beyond, choices that may lead to unimagined sacrifice. Conflict, action, adventure and one devastating death await readers as Eragon battles on behalf of the Varden while Galbatorix ruthlessly attempts to crush and twist him to his own purposes. Can he become a leader who can unite the rebel forces and defeat the King?

Inheritance (Inheritance Cycle)

Not so very long ago, Eragon - Shadeslayer, Dragon Rider - was nothing more than a poor farm boy, and his dragon, Saphira, was only a blue stone in the forest. Now, the fate of an entire civilization rests on their shoulders. Long months of training and battle have brought victories and hope, but they have also brought heartbreaking loss. And still, the real battle lies ahead: they must confront Galbatorix. When they do, they will have to be strong enough to defeat him. And if they cannot, no one can. There will be no second chances.
