Suzanne Collins is a renowned American author, best known for her young adult dystopian novel series, The Hunger Games. Collins' books have been translated into over 50 languages, sold over 100 million copies worldwide, and have been adapted into blockbuster films, making her one of the most influential and successful writers of our time.

Born on August 10, 1962, in Hartford, Connecticut, Collins grew up in the military, following her father's career as a U.S. Air Force officer. Her childhood experiences travelling with her family to different countries greatly influenced her later works, particularly in terms of exploring themes of war, power, and survival.

Collins attended Indiana University and studied theatre and telecommunications, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1985. She then pursued a career in writing, working on a variety of children's television shows, including The Mystery Files of Shelby Woo and Clifford's Puppy Days.

Collins' literary career began in 2003 with her debut novel, Gregor the Overlander, a middle-grade fantasy series. The book follows the adventures of a young boy named Gregor, who falls through a grate in his laundry room and discovers a magical underworld full of giant rats, bats, and cockroaches. The series comprises five books and was praised for its unique world-building, captivating characters, and compelling narrative.

However, it was Collins' Hunger Games series that brought her international recognition and catapulted her into the limelight. The Hunger Games is a dystopian young adult series set in the future in the ruins of North America, now known as Panem, which is controlled by a totalitarian government located in the Capitol.

The books follow the story of Katniss Everdeen, a young girl from the impoverished District 12, who is forced to participate in the annual Hunger Games, a televised event where 24 teenagers, known as tributes, fight to the death in a controlled arena. The series explores themes such as inequality, power, propaganda, and the effects of war on individuals and society.

The first book of the trilogy, The Hunger Games, was published in 2008, and it quickly became a global phenomenon, spending over 260 consecutive weeks on the New York Times Bestseller List. It has been adapted into a successful movie franchise starring Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss, which has grossed over $3 billion worldwide.

The subsequent books, Catching Fire and Mockingjay continued to dominate the bestseller lists, with Mockingjay selling over 450,000 copies in its first week of release in the United States alone. The books have been praised for their fast-paced plot, well-developed characters, and thought-provoking themes, which have resonated with readers of all ages.

One of the defining features of Collins' writing is her ability to create complex and multi-dimensional characters, particularly female ones. Katniss Everdeen, the protagonist of The Hunger Games, is a prime example of this. She is strong-willed, resourceful, and fiercely protective of her loved ones, yet also vulnerable, haunted by her traumatic experiences, and struggling with her own moral compass.

Collins also explores the impact of trauma and violence on her characters, particularly in the context of war and conflict. She portrays the emotional toll that violence takes on individuals and communities and how it can lead to trauma, PTSD, and other mental health issues.

In addition to her novels, Collins has also written several picture books, including Year of the Jungle and When Charlie McButton Lost Power, as well as a science fiction series, The Underland Chronicles, which she wrote prior to The Hunger Games.
