View full detailsAs they say in literary circles; if you are looking for a good period drama, trust the British to give you the best. The bestselling Poldark Books by Winston Graham were published from 1945 to 1953 and continued from 1973 to 2002. The series can be divided in two cycles; the first seven books are set in the 18th century, concluding in 1799. Whilst the remaining five are concerned with the early years of the 19th century and the lives of the descendants of the previous novels’ main characters.
The Poldark series is loved across the world for its Victorian blend of romance, drama, unforgettable characters and a beautifully evocative portrayal of Cornwall. Spanning the late 18th and early 19th centuries—Poldark is a saga that follows the life of Ross Poldark. Ross is a brooding and principled young man who has just returned from the American Revolutionary War, only to find his life and estate disrupted. As Ross returns to his home in Cornwall after three years of war, he finds that his father is dead, his Cornish copper mine is failing and his childhood sweetheart, the beautiful Elizabeth Chynoweth is engaged to his cousin Francis.
A tale of romance, intrigue, betrayal, and one of the most heart-breaking love triangles in modern fiction ensue—as Poldark rescues a young woman, Demelza, from a beating, and takes her on as a kitchen maid while trying to help the people of the village and attempting to gain control of the mines sought after by his rival, the greedy and arrogant George Warleggan. As the plot thickens, Ross falls in love with the charming Demelza and tries to build a better world for her and their children whilst fighting his arch-enemy, the swaggering and ruthless financier, Warleggan.
Written between 1945 and 2002, the twelve Poldark novels made great television content and were eventually adapted for television, and two BBC series—the first starring Robin Ellis and Angharad Rees in the 1970s and the second, which premiered in 2015, starring Aidan Turner and Eleanor Tomlinson—were both enormous successes.
