Simply put, if a book is not rooted in a fictional narrative or a made-up story, then it qualifies as adult nonfiction. This encompasses several sub-genres within literature—biographies, history, memoirs, self-help, and so on. According to a recent annual report from the Association of American Publishers, the adult nonfiction market in the US showed a revenue increase of 5.4% between 2016 and 2017. That, however, is not why we endorse adult non-fiction for parents and non-fiction for kids. Sales aside, non-fiction books are a great way to feed people’s appetite for knowledge, learning, and bettering their lives.

Historic non-fiction:
Historical non-fiction consists of true accounts of historic events and eras. If you are someone that enjoys reading about historic cultures and events, then this is the non-fiction sub-genre for you.

Biographies:
Biographies, autobiographies, and memoirs—this sub-genre of nonfiction is focused on the life stories of individuals usually with an underlying theme, for instance, a cause they endorsed. Whilst autobiographies and memoirs are written by the subjects themselves; biographies are written in the third person by an author about the life of the subject.
Few genres are as fascinating as biographies; reading about people’s lives, their struggles and their stories. One of our favourites from the genre is Becoming by Michelle Obama. An insight into the life of the USA’s former first lady.
Travelogues:
Travelogues and memoirs might seem like cousins because they both present first-person accounts of the author’s experience with something. However, travelogues are more instructive and offer more practical information about travel to a particular destination whilst memoirs are most value and ideology based.
Academic literature and Guides:
Academic textbooks are structurally designed and written to educate and inform. These could be school textbooks or adult textbooks for adults interested in particular trades like music or cars. Whilst books under this genre will only be as useful as your interest in the subject, we do offer some interesting options to pick from. Philosophy or psychology:
These are most likely to be published by university-affiliated publication houses and are most likely to be written by scholars and academics who are experts on the subject. This genre is a gamut in itself as it may consist of traditional philosophy, psychology, scientific theories, or research papers.

Journalism:
Arguably the best non-fiction of all time, journalism is another broad sub-genre of nonfiction however it includes several media. If we were to only focus on literary/print journalism it would come down to journals, newspapers, and magazines. This would also include non-fiction books by journalists who have covered wars, unearthed a controversial story or true crime. One of our personal favourites has been We Are Bellingcat: An Intelligence Agency for the People by Eliot Higgins, a British citizen journalist. From the downing of Malaysia Flight 17 over the Ukraine to the sourcing of weapons in the Syrian Civil War; the book digs deep into some of Bellingcat's most successful investigations and thus makes for an intriguing and insightful read.
Self-help and instruction manuals:
Self-help books are more often than not about business success stories, staying organised, money management, health, and wellness, or relationship advice. Self-help non-fiction books also tend to perform very well on the non-fiction book charts and become bestselling non-fiction titles.
