View full detailsA work of literature that is based on facts, truth, or real-life events can be categorised as non-fiction. Simply put, if a book is not rooted in a fictional narrative or a made-up story, then it qualifies as adult nonfiction. This encompasses several sub-genres within literature—biographies, history, memoirs, self-help, and so on. From intriguing accounts of interesting lives to enlightening accounts of the rich history of our world—experts believe, there are a ton of non-fiction books to read before you die.
One of the many non-fiction classics to read in your lifetime is, Call the Midwife 4 Book Set by Jennifer Worth. Fascinating tales of social history, this one is a midwife’s account of 1950s London.
The truth they say can be stranger than fiction—this statement arguably sums up the genre that is non-fiction. Non-fiction books for adults are loaded with just as much suspense and thrill as any fictional novel, if not more.
Whether you want to read something intriguing and thrilling for leisure or you want to read to learn/research—adult non-fiction is a vast gamut of sub-genres and there is plenty to choose from. This makes adult non-fiction just the genre you can immerse yourself in when trying to go back to reading as a habit. Treat yourself to some of the world’s best non-fiction books of all time, whilst you try to get your kids hooked on books or try to inculcate the reading habit.
Why Read Nonfiction?
According to a recent annual report from the Association of American Publishers, the adult nonfiction market in the US showed a revenue increase of 5.4% between 2016 and 2017. That, however, is not why we endorse adult non-fiction for parents and non-fiction for kids. Sales aside, non-fiction books are a great way to feed people’s appetite for knowledge, learning, and bettering their lives.
Here at Books2Door, we not only understand your hunger for knowledge but also know that the internet with its several web pages, videos, and podcasts is not going to satiate your appetite for information. This is precisely why we believe in the power of books and curating book recommendations.
Non-fiction literature may be a rich and varied genre but that also makes it harder to narrow down a reading list that works for you, from amongst the wealth of titles that exist across the world. This is where we at Books2Door step in and try to curate the best non-fiction books for every age.
Whilst we do bring you the bestselling non-fiction titles, we also ensure we stock up on books that cater to specific tastes and topics. You can for instance find era-defining non-fiction titles or specific mindfulness and wellness books that speak of parenting and relationships. You can also find a curated collection of non-fiction books for kids to choose from, so you can make the most of your book budget for yourself and your kids.
From poetry to classic works of Mark Twain and Virginia Woolf, to best non-fiction books of 2022, to short stories and more; here are some sub-genres of non-fiction that we have curated for you and your children:
Historic non-fiction:
Historical non-fiction consists of true accounts of historic events and eras. If you are someone that enjoys reading about historic cultures and events, then this is the non-fiction sub-genre for you.
Amongst several non-fiction titles that delve in history is Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind that challenges everything we seemingly know about the history of human evolution. We also have books like Survivors: True Stories of Children in the Holocaust that venture into the darker pockets of our world’s political history.
Biographies:
Biographies, autobiographies, and memoirs—this sub-genre of nonfiction is focused on the life stories of individuals usually with an underlying theme, for instance, a cause they endorsed. Whilst autobiographies and memoirs are written by the subjects themselves; biographies are written in the third person by an author about the life of the subject.
Few genres are as fascinating as biographies; reading about people’s lives, their struggles and their stories. One of our favourites from the genre is Becoming by Michelle Obama. An insight into the life of the USA’s former first lady.
Travelogues:
Travelogues and memoirs might seem like cousins because they both present first-person accounts of the author’s experience with something. However, travelogues are more instructive and offer more practical information about travel to a particular destination whilst memoirs are most value and ideology based.
Academic literature and Guides:
Academic textbooks are structurally designed and written to educate and inform. These could be school textbooks or adult textbooks for adults interested in particular trades like music or cars. Whilst books under this genre will only be as useful as your interest in the subject, we do offer some interesting options to pick from. HBR's 10 Must Reads for Sales and Marketing Collection is one such.
If you are into gothic literature and have a thing for the darker sciences or simply want to ready something spooky for halloween, then here is book you must read Love Witchcraft 2 Books By Arin Murphy & Hiscock
Philosophy or psychology:
These are most likely to be published by university-affiliated publication houses and are most likely to be written by scholars and academics who are experts on the subject. This genre is a gamut in itself as it may consist of traditional philosophy, psychology, scientific theories, or research papers.
Whilst investing in mental health goes beyond reading about it, we’d say it is a start. Here is book you can consider when working on your emotional health, The Courage to be Happy Book By Ichiro Kishimi & Fumitake Koga.
Journalism:
Arguably the best non-fiction of all time, journalism is another broad sub-genre of nonfiction however it includes several media. If we were to only focus on literary/print journalism it would come down to journals, newspapers, and magazines. This would also include non-fiction books by journalists who have covered wars, unearthed a controversial story or true crime. One of our personal favourites has been We Are Bellingcat: An Intelligence Agency for the People by Eliot Higgins, a British citizen journalist. From the downing of Malaysia Flight 17 over the Ukraine to the sourcing of weapons in the Syrian Civil War; the book digs deep into some of Bellingcat's most successful investigations and thus makes for an intriguing and insightful read.
Self-help and instruction manuals:
Self-help books are more often than not about business success stories, staying organised, money management, health, and wellness, or relationship advice. Self-help non-fiction books also tend to perform very well on the non-fiction book charts and become bestselling non-fiction titles.
Fitness and wellness guides for instance have been popular for sometime now. Men's Fitness 12 Week Body Plan - Paperback by Nick Mitchell
