Set in Taisho-era Japan, where deadly demons lurk in the woods, Tanjiro Kamado is the sole human survivor of a brutal massacre. After returning from a hard day’s labour, forced to stop due to a heavy storm, he returns to find his entire family murdered in cold blood. Now, all he has left is his sister, transformed into the very monster that perished in their only family- a demon. About the series:
Tanjiro Kamada is a kind-hearted and extremely intelligent boy living in the mountains with his family. After his father’s death, he became his family’s breadwinner by making trips to the nearby village to sell charcoal. Though the work was strenuous, Tanjiro always remained hopeful. But everything changed when he came home one day to find his entire family violently slaughtered by a demon lurking in the nearby forest. Tanjiro, along with his sister Nezuko, is the only survivor of the brutal attack, with his sister being transformed into a demon. With no heart left to kill his only remaining family, Tanjiro is about to be murdered until his sister regains part of her senses and surprisingly starts to show signs of human emotions and thoughts.
Tanjiro vows from that day to become part of the Hashira, a group of the highest-ranking combatants in the Demon Slayer Corps. They are the organisation’s most elite and powerful warriors, serving a pivotal role in their war against Muzan Kibutsuji and the Twelve Kizuki. Muzan is the main antagonist of the series and is considered to be the first human to become a demon over a thousand years ago. Along with his group of twelve of the most powerful demons who serve directly under Muzan’s command, these demons are among the most deadly due to their highly augmented powers.
After years of strenuous training, Tanjiro must take part in a formidable and deadly final exam to make him officially become a member of the Demon Slayer Corps. Join Tnajiro as he beings his work hunting down and slaying demons alongside his sister, Nezuko, as they work their way up the ranks of the Hashira and try to find a cure to turn his sister back into a human again, all whilst evading the capture of Muzan and his twelve terrifying demons.
About the author:
Koyoharu Gotouge is a Japanese manga artist best known for his work on the popular manga series Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba. As of February 2021, the manga series had over 150 million copies in circulation, making it the ninth-bestselling manga series of all time.
Born in 1989, Koyoharu Gotouge was born in Fukuoka Prefecture in Japan, located on the island of Kyushu. The author maintains anonymity in public.
They were included as “phenoms” in Time’s annual list of the top 100 Most Influential People and became one of the first ever manga artists to receive the achievement. In 2020, Gotouge received the 2nd Kodansha's Noma Publishing Culture Award, which honours those who have contributed to "reinventing publishing". Gotouge received the award due to the franchise's sales, which boosted the entire publishing industry from 2019 to 2020. In the same year, Gotouge also won the award for best screenplay/original story at the Tokyo Anime Award Festival.
