  5. Jane Goodall

Amelia Earhart was an aviation pioneer and the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic. In Amelia Earhart, Vegara tells the story of Earhart's childhood, where she was fascinated by aeroplanes and dreams of flying. Despite the societal norms of the time, Earhart pursued her passion for aviation and eventually became a record-breaking pilot. The book also touches on Earhart's advocacy for women's rights and her determination to break barriers in a male-dominated field. The illustrations in the book, by Mariadiamantes, are colourful and vibrant, capturing Earhart's adventurous spirit and courage.

Marie Curie was a physicist and chemist who made significant contributions to the field of science, including the discovery of radium and polonium. In Marie Curie, Vegara highlights Curie's early life in Poland and her struggle to receive an education, as well as her groundbreaking research and achievements in the field of radioactivity. The book also touches on Curie's personal life, including her marriage to fellow scientist Pierre Curie and the challenges she faced as a woman in a male-dominated field. The illustrations, by Frau Isa, are both beautiful and educational, showing Curie's scientific experiments and highlighting the significance of her discoveries.

Rosa Parks was an African American civil rights activist who famously refused to give up her seat on a bus in Montgomery, Alabama, sparking the Montgomery Bus Boycott. In Rosa Parks, Vegara tells the story of Parks' upbringing in Alabama and her lifelong dedication to fighting for racial justice. The book also touches on the Montgomery Bus Boycott and the impact it had on the civil rights movement. The illustrations, by Marta Antelo, capture Parks' quiet strength and resilience, as well as the determination of the civil rights activists who fought for equality.

Harriet Tubman was an abolitionist and activist who escaped slavery and helped others to do the same through the Underground Railroad. In Harriet Tubman, Vegara tells the story of Tubman's childhood in slavery and her journey to freedom, as well as her work as a conductor on the Underground Railroad and her later activism in the suffrage movement. The book also touches on Tubman's bravery and determination, as well as the risks she took to help others escape slavery. The illustrations, by Pili Aguado, are both beautiful and emotional, capturing the hardships and triumphs of Tubman's life.

Jane Goodall is a primatologist and conservationist known for her groundbreaking research on chimpanzees and her work to protect the environment. In Jane Goodall, Vegara tells the story of Goodall's childhood in England and her love for animals, as well as her pioneering research in Tanzania and her advocacy for conservation and animal welfare. The book also touches on Goodall's role as a mentor and educator, inspiring future generations to care for the planet. The illustrations, by Beatrice Cerocchi, are both playful and educational, capturing Goodall's love for animals and her passion for science.

One of the strengths of the Little People, Big Dreams series is its focus on inspiring individuals from diverse backgrounds and fields. The books highlight the achievements of women, people of colour, and individuals with disabilities, promoting inclusivity and representation in children's literature. Additionally, the books emphasize the importance of perseverance, determination, and courage, encouraging children to pursue their passions and overcome obstacles.

Another strength of the series is its accessibility. The books are written in a simple, easy-to-understand language, making them accessible to children of different ages and reading levels. The illustrations are also colourful and engaging, helping to bring the stories to life and capture the imagination of young readers.

In addition to the individual stories, the Little People, Big Dreams series also includes a timeline of each person's life, as well as a list of additional resources for children and parents to learn more. This helps to further contextualise the person's achievements and provides opportunities for deeper learning.

Overall, the Little People, Big Dreams series is a valuable addition to children's literature, introducing young readers to inspiring individuals who have made significant contributions to society. The books promote inclusivity, perseverance, and courage and encourage children to pursue their passions and make a difference in the world. The series is a wonderful resource for parents and educators looking to teach children about important historical figures and inspire them to become future leaders and changemakers.

From the publisher:

Amelia Earhart

When Amelia was young, she liked to imagine she could stretch her wings and fly away like a bird. As a grown woman, she set a new female world record for flying up to 14,000 feet. She also flew across the Atlantic and the Pacific oceans and eventually undertook the most dangerous mission of all: to fly all the way around the world.

Marie Curie

When Marie Curie was young, she was unable to attend university because she was a woman. But when she was older, her scientific work was respected around the world. Her discoveries of radium and polonium dramatically helped in the fight against cancer, and she went on to win the Nobel Prize for Physics! The inspiring story of this clever and courageous woman features a facts and photos section at the back.

Rosa Parks

Rosa Parks grew up in Alabama, where she learned to stand up for herself at an early age. Rosa went on to become a civil rights activist whose courage and dignity sparked the movement that ended segregation. She never stopped working for equal rights. This inspiring story of her life features a facts and photos section at the back.

Harriet Tubman

Harriet Tubman was born into slavery on a plantation in Maryland, U.S.A. Though life was hard, Harriet persisted. She used all of her strength and bravery to escape slavery and journey north on the Underground Railroad. Harriet made the dangerous mission back to the South many times, fighting her whole life to bring others with her to freedom. The incredible story of her life features a facts and photos section at the back.

Jane Goodall

When Jane was little, her father gave her a toy chimpanzee called Jubilee. This inspired her lifelong love of animals and she went to study them in the wild as soon as she could. Jane lived with chimpanzees in their natural habitat and became famous for her pioneering approach to research. She now educates the public on animal rights. This inspiring story of her life features a facts and photos section at the back.
