The War at Sea 1939-1945

The Second World War produced hundreds of actions and incidents at sea that were packed with drama and suspense, and which evoked the greatest heroism. Here is a generous selection of personal experiences written by the men and women who were there: in the British and Commonwealth Navies, the Fleet Air Arm, the Merchant Navy, or ashore. Names that have passed into history — Arvik, Dunkirk, the River Plate, the Bismarck, the Scharnhorst, Crete, Anzio, the Battle of the Atlantic, the Russian convoys — all these and many others are reflected in these gripping eyewitness testimonies.

This is the first volume in the gripping Freedom’s Battle trilogy, which provides intensely vivid accounts of war at sea, in the air and on land. Far better than any single narrative, the extracts build up a complete picture of the War as it was experienced by the men and women who actually fought in it.

The War in the Air 1939-1945

The second volume of the classic Freedom’s Battle trilogy provides intensely vivid accounts of the war in the air.
From the brilliant summer nonchalance of 1940 to the grim, anonymous exhaustion of the bomber crews delivering the infernos of Hamburg and Dresden, all the great dramas of the air war are here, described by the men of the British and Commonwealth Air Forces who did the fighting. We accompany them in the desperate days of the fall of France; during the Battle of Britain; throughout the agony of Bomber Command; over the high seas; to Malta; the desert battles; and in the struggle with Japan.

The War on Land 1939-1945

“This anthology is . . . a distillation of what the fighters put down at the time or in retrospect to tell others (or perhaps convince themselves) what it was all about. Here are the words of the wise, the witty, the nonchalant, the devil-may-care: the poets and the prodigals.”— From the Editor’s Foreword

On land, the Second World War provided an infinite variety of experiences, often under stresses as great as human beings have ever endured. Reactions are correspondingly various — from the comic to the appalled. Here are the testimonies of those who fought in all the great campaigns — in Europe, Africa and the Far East. Here too are the words of prisoners, partisans, saboteurs and soldiers in private armies.
