A Song of Ice and Fire Series
Welcome to Westeros, where you will face a cruel and violent battle between families for the throne. George R.R. Martin’s fantasy epic is arguably one of the most iconic and influential since J R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings series.
HBO’s groundbreaking adaptation of George R.R.Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series started in 2011 and ended in 2019. The series eventually overtook the books as George R.R. Martin is yet to finish writing them. Many fans were left unhappy with how the show ended and so are eagerly awaiting Martin’s conclusion to A Song of Ice and Fire, which he has said will end over two books called The Winds of Winter and A Dream of Spring.
The Books in Order
The first book in the series, A Game of Thrones was published in 1996 and sets the scene for the horror to come. King Robert Baratheon calls forth his friend and warden of The North Eddard Stark to become his advisor, hand of the king. From this, a series of events result in the three main houses Stark, Lannister and Targaryen fighting for their right to the throne of the seven kingdoms.
A Clash of Kings (1998) was the next to be released and saw the civil war unleashed in the seven kingdoms of Westeros. Robert Baratheon’s son Joffrey currently sits on the Iron throne but Robert's two brothers Renly and Stannis have a claim to the throne. Meanwhile, two regions attempt to withdraw themselves from Westeros, with Robb Stark being declared King of the North and Balon Greyjoy declared himself King of the Iron Islands.
A Storm of Swords (2000) tensions are rising as Robbs' army returns to Riverrun after a successful battle against the Lannisters’ army in the west, Jaime and Brienne are captured by the Boltons all while the Lannisters have new allies, the Tyrells. This book builds up to even more anguish, including the catastrophic red wedding.
The fourth book in the series is A Feast for Crows (2005). At this point, The War of the Five Kings is slowly coming to an end. The book journeys through the different kingdoms with Sansa hiding in The Vale with LittleFinger, Arya training with The Faceless Men in Braavos and Cersei facing difficulty as she tries to help her young son, the newly appointed King. The tensions are rising as the aftermath of the war begins.
The fifth instalment A Dance with Dragons (2011) sees The Wall occupied by Stannis Baratheon and Jon Snow as the newly appointed Lord Commander of the Night's Watch. With a total of eighteen different points of view, A Dance with Dragons is able to show the slow build-up to the eventual final battle for the throne.
