Darkened libraries, cloak-and-dagger secret campus societies, and overshadowing gothic architecture. The dark academia aesthetic has taken the internet by storm, rooting its presence within contemporary fiction. At Books2Door, we’ve compiled a list of the most top-rated and best-selling Dark Academic Books we have to offer. These books are a firm fan-favourite amongst Teens and YA readers as well as Adults.
What is Dark Academia?
The subculture of dark academia is concerned with the arts, classic greek and gothic architecture, and the prominence of knowledge and education. In literature, Dark Academic Books are most recognisable for their particularly dark and heavy themes of existentialism and death against a mystery and thrilling academic setting. These books are often classed as moody and mysterious, with narratives taking place within the confines of an esteemed boarding school or university. Dark Academia Books Recommendations
Considered one of the most definitive dark academic novels, Donna Tartt’s The Secret History has been described as compelling and elegant, dramatic and playful. This murder mystery novel follows the perspective of Richard Papen, who studies literature at the elite Hampden College in Vermont. Under the influence of their charismatic classics professor, Richard and five other eccentric misfits discover a new way of thinking that goes against their mundane existence leading them to corruption, betrayal and evil. The Secret History is a story of two parts; the chain of events that led to the death of a classmate- and what happens next.
Our next recommendation is a more subtle Dark Academia book but nonetheless should not be left out of our list. Published in 2005, Kazuo Ishiguro’s Never Let Me Go is set in a darkly dystopic version of contemporary England. The book follows Kathy’s perspective as she attempts to come to terms with her childhood and upbringing and towards a bleak fate that awaits her and her closest friends. Ishiguro masterfully presents the fragility of life, identity, empathy and friendship in this novel against the prominence of boarding schools harbouring dark secrets. Time named it the best novel of 2005 and one of the top 100 novels published since 1923. The book has also been adapted into the 2010 film of the same name, directed by Mark Romanek and starring Cary Milligan, Andrew Garfield and Keira Knightley.
No Dark Academia list would be complete without mentioning Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo. From the author of the Shadow and Bone series, this book has become a TikTok sensation. This paranormal fantasy series follows Galaxy “Alex” Stern, who is the sole survivor of a horrific, unsolved homicide. At her hospital bed, she is offered a second chance: to attend one of the world’s most elite universities. But what’s the catch, and why her? As Alex struggles to search for answers to these questions herself, she arrives in New Haven, tasked by her mysterious benefactors with monitoring the activities of Yale’s secret societies- whose occult activities turn out to be rather more sinister than any imagination might conceive.
