About the Show

The show follows six-year-old Bluey, her little sister Bingo and their parents, Bandit and Chilli. The show's creator Joe Brumm was eager to reflect modern parenting, with both adults shown to be working parents, Bandit as an archaeologist and Chilli working part-time in airport security. The show features important themes, including family, growing up, play and Australian culture. Bluey is based on the Australian Cattle Dog, also known as a Blue Heeler, hence the family's last name. There are many references to Australian culture and climate throughout the show. The show is produced in Queensland, so the climate, architecture and wildlife are what would be expected in that area of Australia.

The show has also received praise for raising awareness of important subjects. For example, a deaf character, Dougie, who uses Auslan (Australian Sign Language) to communicate with his Mum, was introduced. Jack was introduced as a character in Bluey's class who has ADHD, highlighting that he struggles to sit still and remember things. The topic of fertility is raised when it is heavily implied that Chili's sister Brandy, cannot have children even though she would love to have them. Bluey highlights important subjects that may be difficult to discuss with children without scaring or upsetting them. The show has been praised by many parents, stating that they have found it easier to talk about certain subjects using Bluey episodes as reference points.

The show was co-commissioned by ABC and BBC but has been released for American audiences on Disney+. The show was created in Queensland and is currently still being produced there.
