Khaled Hosseini, born on March 4, 1965, in Kabul, Afghanistan, is an internationally acclaimed novelist renowned for his poignant stories that often explore the lives of Afghans affected by war, displacement, and familial bonds.
Hosseini was born into a progressive family; his father was a diplomat, and his mother was a high school teacher. In 1976, when he was just 11 years old, the family moved to Paris due to his father's work. They were supposed to return to Afghanistan in 1980, but the Soviet invasion and the ensuing political turmoil prevented that. The family sought political asylum in the United States and eventually resettled in San Jose, California. Hosseini attended Santa Clara University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in Biology. Subsequently, he pursued medicine at the University of California, San Diego, School of Medicine, graduating in 1993.
While Hosseini was practising medicine, he was also nurturing a deep-seated passion for storytelling. This culminated in his first novel, The Kite Runner, which was an instant hit, selling millions of copies and later being adapted into a film and a stage play. The story deals with themes of guilt, redemption, and the complex nature of father-son relationships, all set against the backdrop of Afghanistan's troubled history.
