Raised in Essex, Bernard Cornwell OBE is a master of historical fiction. Sharpe

The first book in the series, Sharpe’s Eagle, was released in 1981. Since then, the series has been a phenomenal success. Currently, there are twenty-two books, not including the short stories, in this adventure series based on the soldiers of a British soldier, Richard Sharpe, during the Napoleonic Wars.

The popularity of the book series continues with the TV series starring Sean Bean in the titular role, running from 1993 to 1997. The Last Kingdom 

The Last Kingdom, also known as the Saxon Series, has a total of thirteen books following the journey of Uhtred of Bebbanburg, who was born into a Saxon family but was captured as a child and adopted by a Danish Warlord. Cornwell takes the reader through the battle between the Saxons and the Danes for the last kingdom, Wessex. The story officially came to an end in 2020 with Cornwell’s last book of the series, War Lord. 

The TV adaptation of The Last Kingdom began in 2015 and finished in 2022, with a feature-length movie following in 2023. The series starred Alexander Dreymon as Uhtred and followed the books up to book ten, The Flame Bearer.
