Barrington Stoke is an independent publishing company that specialises in accessible books. Designed to be dyslexia-friendly, their books are all printed with a particular font and off-white paper and larger spacing.
Every child can be a reader, and Barrington Stoke is driven to provide books that match a child's age and not their reading level. Aiming to keep their interest whilst they gradually improve over time. The books are expertly edited to ensure comprehension and accessibility, with shorter novels helping the reader build their confidence.
Many authors have worked with Barrington Stoke to publish work specifically for dyslexic readers. These books have also been used to encourage reluctant readers to start reading. Whether they are beginning to read with a parent or want to read independently, Barrington Stoke will have a book to suit their interests.
Malorie Blackman
Malorie Blackman OBE is a British author and former Children's Laureate. Her work is predominantly aimed at children and young adults. Blackman uses science fiction and dystopian themes to portray important social and racial issues.
Barrington Stoke has worked with Malorie Blackman to create more accessible novels for different ages. For younger readers, Ellie and the Cat follows a rude and spoilt girl who is turned into a cat by her Grandma. Ellie must prove to her family that she has changed in order to be turned back into a human. This is aimed at ages 6-7 and contains clear text, which is broken up by illustrations.
Why not check out A Dangerous Game for slightly older readers, ages 8+? A Dangerous Game follows Sam, who has sickle-cell anaemia, as he goes on a school trip, but when his friends start taking part in a challenge, Sam wants to prove that he is just as strong as them. This book is an essential read for all ages as it raises awareness of sickle-cell anaemia and the effect it can have on someone.
Fans of Malorie Blackman's dystopian novels should check out her novella Robot Girl. Claire has been eager to learn what her dad has been working on in his lab, but Clarie soon realises her dad has created a monster! Aimed for ages 8+, this book, along with the other Barrington Stoke books, has a dyslexia-friendly layout, typeface and paper stock so that even more readers can enjoy it.
Tom Palmer
Tom Palmer's books are all set in either WW1 or WW2 and portray different perspectives and events over those historical periods. All books in the series are targeted for ages 10+, so they are perfect for helping young readers who may be struggling with reading independently.
Over the line follows Jack, a professional footballer who is just about to start his career playing for his country when he is forced to enlist in the Army. This bestselling novel is based on the true story of WWI war hero and footballing legend Jack Cock. Another bestseller from Tom Palmer is Armistice Runner. This novel follows Lily as she is training for races whilst struggling with her worries and fears of losing her Gran to Alzheimer's. After Lily discovers her Gran's WW1 diaries, she forms a connection with her Gran as she learns all about her inspiring life. Why not check out our Tom Palmer Five Book Collection containing Over the line, Armistice Runner, Arctic Star, After the War and D-Day Dog.
