Understanding Black History Month

Initially started in the United States, Black History Month was adopted in the UK in 1987 with the aim of acknowledging and celebrating the diverse history of Africa and the Caribbean, as well as the experiences and contributions of African and Caribbean communities in the UK. October was chosen for the celebration to coincide with the start of the academic year, fostering educational and learning opportunities around Black history.

Why October in the UK? The establishment of Black History Month in October in the UK was spearheaded by Akyaaba Addai-Sebo, a Ghanaian analyst who served as a coordinator of special projects for the Greater London Council. Inspired by the American tradition and driven by the desire to address the racial identity issues faced by Black children, Addai-Sebo worked with various community leaders, organisations, and educators to dedicate October to the remembrance and celebration of Black heritage.

Black History Month serves as a reminder and opportunity for everyone, regardless of their background, to learn about, appreciate, and celebrate the diverse cultures that make up the UK. It’s a time to reflect on the past, consider the present, and work towards a future where equality and diversity are valued and embraced. Educational institutions, businesses, and community organisations host events, exhibitions, and discussions to promote understanding, respect, and equality.
