Happy Autism Awareness Day!
The team at Books2Door would like to celebrate and honour those within the autism community. Autism looks different for everybody, and everyone has their strengths and challenges. This Autism Awareness Day, we are looking to raise awareness and show you some of our shining authors who are autistic or have characters with Autism in their books. Come explore the world with us!
Romance is made for everyone
Many don't know, but Helen Hoang, who wrote The Kiss Quotient, celebrates characters on different sides of the autistic spectrum. Being autistic, she wanted to show what real romance can look like, and boy, did she! If you're looking for black romance, look no further than Talia Hibbert, the queen of black British romance, and find your way to the romances of Chloe, Dani, and Eve Brown through this rom-com series.
Uplifting stories for kids
Nadia Shireen's book Billy and the Pirates explores Billy's swashbuckling journeys, making it fun and adventurous for kids whilst showing them Autism presents differently in each child. We believe here at Books2Door that inclusivity is a must in literature, but it's also essential for young children to understand themselves and find tools to help them in any way or form. The Survival Guide for Kids with Autism Spectrum Disorder is a book focused on self-understanding and self-acceptance for all kids. Learning the 'Why' usually helps us navigate the 'How', and that's extremely important for young children.
Non-fiction for Everyone!
A leading cause for the lack of awareness of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is the lack of knowledge; that's why non-fiction is so essential to highlight real-life experiences and a real helping hand. If that is up your street, check out Unmasking Autism by Dr Devon Price. Learn about masking and how damaging it can be for the average person with ASD; Dr Price argues that for every person with ASD you meet, countless others are masking, specifically those of a minority such as women, people of colour, trans and gender non-conforming people—an incredible read on the lack of diversity in the diagnoses stage and a worthwhile experience.
This Autism Awareness Day, the team at Books2Door celebrates incredible authors and readers who connect with these stories and are continuing to spread the important word about ASD. Have a great day, and stay knowledgeable!
