Rev. W. Awdry or otherwise known as Reverend W. Awdry is a railway enthusiast, one of the most influential authors ever in children books held a passion for steam engines as a child. Awdry’s series of Thomas the Tank Engine originated when he told the story about a little engine called Edward when his son developed measles, in order to comfort and keep his mind off the pain. Awdry had made several illustrations of line drawings and wrote down all his ideas and stories including characters like Gordon and Henry which at this point were all ideas not seen by the public yet until Awdry’s wife encouraged him to send these wonderful originalities to publishers.
What followed was a series of profound development of delightful and pleasant characters and books filled with unique characters with various qualities and flavour. The three railway Engines was published in 1945 then the year after, a spectacular most well-known character of all arose called Thomas the Tank Engine. Year by year Awdry worked hard on releasing a new title which gave so much happiness and joy to children around the world in the wonderful land of Sodor, his very last book was released in 1972 called Tramway Engines.
