Potter initially wrote the story of Peter Rabbit in 1893 to provide entertainment to her friend’s 5-year-old son, who was ill. The letter she wrote commenced with: “I don't know what to write to you, so I shall tell you a story about four little rabbits whose names were—Flopsy, Mopsy, Cottontail and Peter.” This followed with Potter publishing more stories, which at first received rejections from publishers before it received positive results. Potter developed her prowess in her ability to draw and illustrate due to her childhood interest in nature surrounding her. As she grew up as a child, she would sketch animals and day by day observation developed her life-like drawing style.

Did you know Potter also studied the plant world meticulously, she produced over 300 paintings of mushrooms by the year 1901 and her study led Potter to submit a paper on spore reproduction. Her continuous hard work and artistry meant that her illustrations in Peter Rabbit have realistic characteristics, even though the characters would wear human clothes, top hats. One of the best-selling children’s books of all time, the Peter Rabbit books are a children's book series written and illustrated by Beatrix Potter that follow mischievous but resourceful young Peter Rabbit as he gets chased around the garden of Mr. McGregor. Peter Rabbit and his three sisters—Flopsy, Mopsy and Cotton-Tail enjoy spending their days hopping around in Mr. McGregor's vegetable garden but when McGregor's relatives suddenly move in, things change and an adventure begins.

Beatrix Potter first created the title character Peter Rabbit in 1893 in a letter she wrote to amuse the sick child of her former governess. After which, Potter’s friends encouraged her to look for a publisher. However, the book was rejected. Potter then decided to publish the book herself in 1901. The original version had 42 black-and-white illustrations and was printed in a small format, so very young children could also enjoy it. The work proved highly popular, and Frederick Warne & Co. subsequently published it—The Tale of Peter Rabbit was released in 1902.

The Tale of Peter Rabbit combines humour and adventure while also featuring a moral lesson to its young readers. The original book revolves around Peter Rabbit, who is far more adventurous than his siblings: Flopsy, Mopsy, and Cotton-tail. Their mother warns them to avoid Mr. McGregor’s garden, because their father had an “accident” there and ended up in a pie. However, after their mother leaves, naughty Peter immediately hops in the garden gate to gorge on Mr. McGregor’s vegetables, whilst the other siblings obediently go up the lane to pick blackberries. Mr. McGregor soon spots Peter near the cucumber frame and chases the terrified little rabbit all over the garden, and Peter loses both his shoes and his little blue jacket. After finally locating the gate, Peter returns home frightened but wiser. This is when Mrs. Rabbit gives Peter chamomile tea, but, for his good siblings, she produces a supper of bread and milk and blackberries. A prompt lesson in obedience, this is a book every parent will want for their child.

Peter Rabbit: A Peep-Inside Tale from the Peter Rabbit book series is about an episode when Peter is so busy in the garden eating radishes that he doesn't notice a red tail poking out of the bushes. Will Peter spot Mr. Tod before it's too late? Get this book for your child and allow them to join Peter Rabbit on this adventure story in this brilliant new board book format with flaps to lift and holes to peep through.
