While his father was away fighting in World War II, his mother met Jack Morpurgo. His parents divorced, his mother remarried, and he and his brother took on Jack’s last name. The family lived in London and Essex, and Morpugo was sent away to school in Sussex and Canterbury. He went to army training in Sandhurst on his stepfather’s insistence but left after nine months.

Morpurgo married Clare, daughter of the founder of Penguin Books, Sir Alan Lane, aged 19, with whom he had three children. From the nation's favourite storyteller, Michael Morpurgo. In the deadly chaos of the First World War, one horse witnesses the reality of battle from both sides of the trenches. Bombarded by artillery, with bullets knocking riders from his back, Joey tells a powerful story of the truest friendships surviving in terrible times. One horse has the seen the best and the worst of humanity. The power of war and the beauty of peace. This is his story.
