Who are Biff, Chip, and Kipper?

Biff, Chip and Kipper have been friends to children learning to read throughout the generations. Biff and Chip are twins, and together with their younger brother Kipper, they have many fun adventures. Their friends include Wilf, Wilma, Anneena, and their dog Floppy. The gang also have a magic key, which lets them travel through time and space.

What’s in the pack?

This Biff, Chip & Kipper pack contains sixteen stories from Stage 5 of Read with Oxford. Each page contains five to seven sentences, and all the stories are thirty-two pages long. There are some continuing elements between the stories, such as a magic key that takes the characters on wild adventures. The books in Stage 5 are a more involved read than the previous stage. This set is for the reader who is flying solo and is beginning to read books on their own.

In these books, our heroes meet a princess in a tower, a secret pop star, and aliens who arrive in a fireball. They travel to Ancient Egypt, go on holiday by train, and use aikido in Ancient Japan. Along the way, you’ll gain confidence in independent reading and get more comfortable with longer sentences.

About the books

Roderick Hunt and Alex Brychta first unleashed Biff, Chip & Kipper in 1985, when Oxford University Press published the first thirty books. Now they’re a vital part of the Read with Oxford reading programme, which also includes great non-fiction and series such as Hero Academy, Winnie and Wilbur, and Julia Donaldson’s Songbirds.

Read with Oxford arranges its books into six tiers, and the learner progresses through them at their own pace. Along the way, they’ll learn how to read more complex sentences, expand their vocabulary into the words they’ll use every day and beyond, and gain confidence in reading independently. After they’ve finished the Read with Oxford programme, children can confidently move on to more grown-up books, and you’ll be assured that they can understand them.

Writer Hunt and illustrator Brychta wanted to create something different than the straitlaced and tedious reading schemes they remembered from their childhoods. So, in order to help slow readers like Hunt’s son, they filled Biff, Chip & Kipper with lively illustrations, fun plots, and absurd situations that keep the reader interested in the narrative long enough to learn the language they need.

The 800+ book series is now read in over 15 languages across more than 130 countries. It’s on the UK National Curriculum, has been taken out from libraries over a million times, and has been read by over 30 million children. The newest TV adaptation, Biff & Chip, premiered on CBeebies and BBC iPlayer in September 2021.
